Modern Art Historian

About Modern Art Historian

This site was first created for the Clio II History and New Media class at George Mason University.

I decided to keep the site and develop it as a venue for me to do what I like best, which is speak about art and share my passion for art with others. I hope that this site will become both a useful informational resource as well as a source of entertainment for both art historians and those with a general interest in art. As I am currently in the process of redesigning the site, I welcome all feedback from visitors.

Who is the Modern Art Historian? I am an art historian living in Northern Virginia. I recently completed my Master's Degree in Art History from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. I also have a background in studio art, focusing on 2-D media, specifically drawing, painting, and printmaking. My first experience with art history came in my junior year of high school. My art studio professor invited me to join the new AP Art History class, and from then on all I wanted to study was art history. I had always loved art, but this was the first time I learned the vocabulary for how to speak about art, and learned the many different ways to view a work. I enjoyed how my teacher broke down preconceptions about certain styles of art and instilled in me the notion that "You don't have to love it, you don't even have to like it, but you should try to understand it."

I attended Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA, earning my BA in Art History. I also worked at the campus art galleries and the slide library. At Mary Washington I found I was interested in a career in art history, but wasn't sure if I wanted to go into museums or academia.

Following graduation I took time off from school to gain professional experience, working at The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. In Spring 2009 I began my graduate studies at GMU. In my graduate studies I focused on twentieth-century art, specifically American, but also studied modern European and Asian art. I am a member of the George Mason Art History Student Association and the College Art Association.
